2009 Jul 13:  "Civil Air Patrol Presentation"

Civil Air Patrol
The Event :   PENNSYLVANIA -- Billy O and Colleen had the pleasure of meeting members of Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron 704 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in July.  Billy O shared some videos from space with the squadron and answered questions from the group, which included cadets from the local area as well as the Pennsylvania CAP Wing Commander, Colonel Mark Lee.

Billy O began his career in aviation in 1977 as a CAP cadet in Alaska, and completed his first solo at age 14 through the organization.

We were delighted to receive Lt. James Longan's invitation to the group's weekly meeting and truly enjoyed chatting with the Pennsylvanian CAP cadets and leadership.

The Festival :   The Fur Rondy Festival is a significant part of the history and tradition of Anchorage, Alaska.

It began in 1935 as a 3-day festival to coincide with the arrival of the miners and trappers with their winter's yield.

Since then, Fur Rendezvous has grown from a small town's 3-day winter sports tournament into an international sensation, featuring:
  • The World Championship Sled Dog Race
  • Running of the Reindeer (Did you see Billy O and Colleen?)
  • Snowshoe Softball
  • The Blanket Toss (an ancient Native Alaskan tradition)
  • The Official Rondy Fur Auction

2009 Mar 3:  "West High Space Flag Ceremony"

The Event :   ANCHORAGE, ALASKA -- West High held a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate a very special and one-of-a-kind school flag, which accompanied Billy O on his mission to Low Earth Orbit onboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.

Unfortunately, Billy O was teaching at the National Test Pilot School on the day of the ceremony and couldn't attend.

His Mom and Dad attended the ceremony in his place, and gave us a full report on the fantastic job the kids did in performing the flag-raising.
